Frequently Asked Questions
Help! We do not know where to start. Everything is going wrong for my college student and no one is sharing much information with my spouse and me.
We understand. When our kids are not doing well or are hurt, we parents want to rush in and help. This is hard when our children are adults in name but are not fully capable of managing crises. Whether your student hates school and wants out immediately, or is failing or not attending classes, has been placed on academic or behavioral suspension or expulsion, there are solutions. Colleges want students to stay and to graduate and sometimes, families and college students just need some guidance and hand-holding to get out of tight spots.
Can you help us move forward? We are desperate!
Yes, we can. You will be in good hands. Over three decades, we have walked alongside many students and families in crisis. We are adept at working with colleges and developing remediation plans including transfer and reentry for struggling students.
My student is failing out of college!
It may feel like the sky is falling and that your student is the only one who has ever struggled. This is not the case. Colleges have many failsafe programs to support students in difficult times. We are here to help you access these programs and provide our own program support to get your student back up on their feet.
My student has been suspended, expelled, sanctioned, arrested. We need help NOW!
We are here now to help. Rest assured. Call us and we can begin today to find solutions. 703.830.7037. [email protected]
Are our meetings confidential?
Yes, all interactions with Professional Tutoring are confidential. We will discuss with you and your student what specifics need to be shared with others including your student’s college or university.
How can Professional Tutoring help?
Professional Tutoring knows students and we know the landscape of higher education. We are here to meet, assess, develop a plan, and work together to find solutions. As they say, this, too, shall pass.
Are you able to work directly with our student’s university?
Yes, we will need a FERPA release from families or students over 18 years old. This document, similar to a medical HIPPA release, allows us to discuss student records and needs with colleges and universities.
What kind of experience do you have in supporting students in the worst of times?
We have all kinds of experience from students unable to get out of bed, failing classes, dismissals, suspensions and expulsions, honor code violations, and even arrests and jail time. We have had students come to us after suffering abuse or criminal violation. We treat them with kid gloves and kindness. In every single instance, we have been able to help our students and make a difference. And every single one has continued their studies.
Do you have contacts in the higher education (university) realm?
Yes, we have spent many years working with admissions and other university staff. We are known and respected in the industry.
Are you always successful in helping students through “disaster recovery”?
Yes, we have never failed in disaster recovery.
Do you work with attorneys and medical professionals?
Yes, we have lists of local attorneys and counselors that we share with clients. If a client has already hired other professionals, we work hand-in-hand with them. We help students put together a holistic story and plan to share with their colleges/universities on their road to recovery or return.
Do you include parents in these processes given that students are over 18?
Yes, we work with our adult students to agree on what can be shared with parents. If we believe that a student is in danger, we advocate strongly for bringing parents into the discussion.
